Uchechi Okere has successfully defended his title at the 11th edition of the annual Alukimba Table Tennis tournament organized by Elmarino Sports Club in Lagos.
Okere defeated Hilton Enearu in the final to win a record seventh title at the one-day championship held at the Alfred Garden Estate Sports centre, Oregun, Lagos while Martins Isoje outclassed Sunny Iwohbo in the third-place match to take the bronze.
Last year’s edition of the tourney was without a sponsor owing to the death of its former sponsor, Toyin Odunowo in 2020.
But this year’s event saw the return of a new sponsor in Chris Anazia, a member of the club in the Diaspora.
An elated Anazia said he was happy to identify with the competition and also satisfied with the outcome of the just-concluded tourney following the addition of a new event for amateur players.
The 11th edition of the tournament was spiced up with the inclusion of the Jejune League, a novel league aimed at capturing members who are less skillful on the table tennis board. The league was sponsored by Mr. Godwin Edomaruseh.
Edomaruseh congratulated the winners – Seye Onadipe who won the maiden league, Nnamdi Ezeli was 1st runner-up while Bello Kayode finished 3rd.
He stated that the league had come to stay and expressed hope that it would gain more traction as the years go by.
Speaking after the competition, Team Manager (TM), Babatunde Adebayo expressed delight that this year’s edition was hugely successful with a massive turnout of club members and other sports-loving members of the society.
At the prize presentation, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Dr. Stephen Ighomuaye accompanied by other BoT members – Barrister Edoka Onyeke and Otunba Seyi Adefarati thanked all members and participants for a good tournament.
